For independent researchers
Peer review for independent researchers
Unjournal gives researchers without an institution the same thing it gives everyone: reviewers chosen for how close their own work is to the paper, and a double-blind review in which nobody sees an affiliation. You do not need a network to find reviewers, or a budget to publish.
Reviewers found from the work, not from contacts
Without a department, there is no colleague down the corridor to read a draft and no editor who knows your name. Unjournal searches the global publication record for the researchers whose own papers sit closest to the questions your paper raises. You see an anonymized shortlist and approve it; nothing reaches a reviewer without your approval.
An affiliation does not weigh on the review
Reviewers never see who wrote the paper or where they work. That matters: in a controlled experiment at a computer science conference, reviewers who could see author names were more likely to recommend papers from famous authors and top institutions than reviewers who could not. Double-blind review removes that signal, for everyone.
No publishing fee to fund yourself
Independent researchers usually pay their own costs. Publishing on Unjournal is free: no article processing charge, no subscription. The review is paid once, on delivery, with a money-back guarantee, and revision rounds are included.
A reviewed record of your work
Once at least two reviewers endorse your revision and none says “not yet”, you can publish it as a peer-reviewed preprint on the Unjournal preprint journal, with the reviews alongside. Readers see what experts checked, whoever you work for.
How it works
- Upload the paper (PDF or Word). It is read for the questions that need an expert, and nothing is sent to anyone yet.
- Approve an anonymized shortlist of researchers whose own work is closest to those questions.
- They review it double-blind, commenting on the passages that matter.
- Revise; the same reviewers check the revision against their own comments.
- Once at least two endorse it and none says “not yet”, you may publish it on the Unjournal preprint journal, with its reviews.
Frequently asked questions
Can I submit to Unjournal without a university affiliation?
Yes. Reviewers never see an affiliation anyway: the review is double-blind.
How does Unjournal find reviewers for an independent researcher?
The same way as for anyone: it searches the global publication record for researchers whose own work is closest to each question the paper raises, and shows you an anonymized shortlist to approve.
Do independent researchers pay to publish on Unjournal?
No. Publishing is free. Only the review is paid, on delivery, with a money-back guarantee.
Who owns the copyright of my paper?
You do. As with any preprint, the copyright stays with the author.
